Dragon Teeth

[Dragon Teeth at Makalua-puna Point, Kapalua]

Here are the legendary 'Dragon Teeth' of West Maui. You can see why the ancient people thought of teeth from the shape and placement in a row. The size and number of "teeth" along with the fury of the water certainly evoke ideas of a dragon. Formed during Maui's last volcanic eruption, this lava is lighter and more granular than the darker and denser lava seen elsewhere. Because of the fierce, incessant wind and the power of the incoming spray, the lava flow meeting the sea and wind created this row of "dragon teeth" along Maui's rugged coastline.
