Father Damien's Grave

Here is the grave and tributes commemorating Father Damien, whose legendary work on behalf of the 19th Century 'leper colony' and its residents earned him Sainthood - along with Sister Marianne Cope. Nearby are the church he built and served, and several other graves of church leaders. Scattered across the peninsula there are said to be 8000 or so graves, many marked, many not, bearing witness to the savagery of the disease and the lives led in exile here. A few residents remain today.
